Car Hire Guide to Milan and Its Main Airports

by Ric Rubichello

Car hire Milan is available from Milan Linate International Airport (airport code LIN) and Milan Malpensa International Airport (airport code MPX). At both airports you can choose vehicles from providers such as Auto Europa, Avis, EasyCar, Targa Rent, Europcar, Hertz, Locauto, Maggiore/National, Sixt and Thrifty/Thrifty Italy by car. They are easy to spot when you come out of the main arrivals halls.

Milan Malpensa Airport car hire is located in Terminal 1 of this two terminal airport in Varese. Hiring a car is essential at Milan Malpensa Airport as it is some 25 miles to the northwest of the city. Just take the state road SS336. From the Autostrada dei Laghi, or Autostrada eight, take the Busto Arsizio exit which links directly with the city of Milan.

Milan Linate is situated some four miles east of the city and so having a car is a good way to make the trip downtown. To get to central Milan head for the ring road or take the Viale Corsica road. Alternatively you can use the Marzo Via XXII.

Milan Linate airport has good links to the northern Italian road network. This includes the Autostrada eight which goes to north Milan and the Autostrada four which goes to the west of Milan. Have some change handy on you. Even if you are heading to the Alps or one of the other directions serviced, you are likely to take a toll road. You can get advice about which route to take from your car hire Milan company.

Milan is the financial centre of Italy and this rich and powerful city boasts the most up-to-date fashions in the world today. Whether you want to shop for gorgeous shoes or high class furniture you will find the most cutting-edge products in Milan. Many car hire Milan customers end up renting luggage racks just to fit all the extra goods that they purchase. Those on a budget holiday may prefer to just do a bit of window shopping or look for bargains in the many fine outdoor markets. These include the dell'Antiquario del Naviglio Grande, which has awesome bargains on furniture, and the Ripi di Porta Ticinese, which is situated in a picturesque location by the river.

Milan is also home to amazing cathedrals and its churches are among the oldest anywhere in Italy. Italy boasts a dazzling cultural heritage which more world heritage sights than anywhere else on earth and visitors cannot say they have really seen the country without visiting Milan. There are many fine art galleries and museums in Milan too but it is the Saint Maria delle Grazie which holds the Last Supper as painted by Leonardo Da Vinci. This masterpiece of great religious significance has puzzled historians who have wondered whether clues about the life of Christ are hidden in the canvas.

However, you should avoid taking your hire car into the city centre. Like all major Italian cities parking is a nightmare and there are many confusing one way streets. Things tend to be a bit better at night but plan ahead as to where you intend to leave your car when you set off. The second city ring known as i bastioni has a congestion charge which costs between two and 10 Euros. How much you pay depends on how much your vehicle pollutes.
